The Situation
She Said: I was headed to Northwest Arkansas for work and would be having a late dinner with friends, so I wanted a heartier lunch. Where better to try than a purveyor of my favorite comfort food: chicken salad!
He Said: Chicken Salad Chick actually began as a small business operating out of the home of Stacy Brown in Auburn, Alabama—until she was informed that it was illegal to do so. So she and her husband opened a store in Auburn in 2008 that just specialized in carryout. Since then, the restaurant began to add franchises and now has at least 225 restaurants throughout the South, with at least a couple of dozen more planned to open this year.
Ambience:
She Said: This place is Keeeee-yuuuuute! It feels very homey-wee-café vibey, but it’s not wee, though it is still very cozy with the branded colors, logos and collateral ad materials. I loved all the little touches of branding, like the sign on the ice dispenser that said, “The good ice” (the small, crunchy, delightful ice that’s best in drinks). The design and division of the large space, the different seating, bright paint and flow really make a not-small shopping-center eatery feel like you’re in a small-town, Main Street lovingly-tended café.
He Said: Oh, yes, Jones, it does feel like you’re in small-town USA here. If you’re in a hurry, you can get your food to go, but if not, it’s worth sitting in this rather comfy atmosphere. You do have to order your food at a counter and pay, and then they bring it to you. But they bring it reasonably quickly, so even if you have someplace to be right after lunch, you can be in and out pretty fast here.
Drinks
She Said: I went for the Diet Coke and added lemon with plenty of the good ice, of course. I had a drive ahead of me, so I was happy for the caffeine. It was good, especially the ice!
He Said: They had fountain drinks, and I had a Coke. I wasn’t driving anywhere and didn’t care one way or the other about the caffeine, it being lunch and not anywhere near bedtime.
Food
She Said: I had mooched about on the Chicken Salad Chick website before we left home, so I was pretty sure I knew what I would order: the cranberry Kelli chicken salad on some sort of bread option, as well as one of those beautiful buttercream-frosted flower cookies. I chose fresh fruit for my side, as I didn’t think I could eat much more than that. I was pleasantly surprised to find when I arrived that croissants are an option for bread, so of course I went for that, as that is the peak of the comfort-food mountain for me. Sometimes croissants in eateries that don’t specialize in baked goods turn out to be a waste of calories: dry, tasteless, disappointing, but these were just fine. I mean, they weren’t French boulangerie good, of course, but they went well with the nutty, fruity chicken salad, which is my favorite. When I go to the trouble to make it at home, I always put fruit and nuts in it (dried goji berries and pecans). This was a pleasant, tasty, satisfying lunch. I would get it again, either for dine-in or via the drive-through.
He Said: This place is not called “Chicken Salad Chick” for nothing. The big specialty here is chicken salad (I’m not sure where the “Chick” comes from—maybe that was Stacy Brown’s original name for it, so she was calling herself the “Chicken Salad Chick.” I’m just gonna go with that). There are no fewer than twelve different flavors of chicken salad on the menu. There are also two different green salads you can get, and you can get sides of mac and cheese, fresh fruit, or three other salads. So if you want, you can get a salad with a side of salad.
This is perfect comfort food for She Said, who loves her chicken salad, but if you are someone like me, who doesn’t really think of salad as a complete lunch, there are fewer choices on the menu. There are four kinds of sandwich you can get: the first of these is—wait for it—a chicken salad BLT. There is also a pimento cheese BLT (which does sound awesome), a turkey club, and a turkey pesto sandwich. Since my low-fat diet makes bacon a bit of a problem for me, I looked at the only other possibility on the menu: the Soup of the Day. Today the soup of the day was broccoli cheese.
I ordered a bowl of the broccoli cheese soup and was gratified at how fresh and flavorful it was. They had loaded me up with quite a few wheat crackers, which were surprisingly tasty. I also grabbed a limited-time chocolate fudge brownie for desert. It was sweet and chewy and a perfectly satisfying end to the meal.
Service
She Said: At Chicken Salad Chick, you order at the counter, get your drinks and take your order number back to the table to wait for it to be delivered freshly made. As a first-time visitor, I found the woman who helped us at the counter to be very friendly, patient and welcoming. She answered our questions and when she found out what we were both ordering put it together in a way to get us a better deal (and me an extra wee cookie). In a franchise restaurant, it’s really the service that makes a place feel comfy, and she really did make a difference to us.
He Said: Yes, since as She Said has repeatedly declared, I am the world’s slowest orderer, it was nice that the person at the counter proved to be patient with first-time customers like me. I should also add that our food arrived very quickly after we sat down, and for people on a tight lunch schedule, that was a big plus.
What We Got and What We Paid: One trio (chicken salad sandwich & soup & wee cookie), two drinks, and one brownie for $24.84.
Elapsed Time from Our Arrival to Food Arrival: We arrived at 12:12 p.m., and our food arrived to our table at 12:19 p.m.
Rating:
She Said: I have eaten chicken salad sandwiches all over this fine world, and I found this one to be tasty and satisfying, served in a pretty and cheerful atmosphere.
He Said: I suspect this is a place catering mainly to ladies who want a light lunch and enjoy chicken salad. There may indeed be men for whom chicken salad has the same comfort food vibe as it does for She Said, but I’m guessing they are in the minority. Anyway, it’s a comfortable place with fresh and healthy food that serves you quickly and is inexpensive. So it’s a darn good lunch option.
She Responded: It’s so cute that as a dude you think chicken salad is “healthy” and a “light lunch.” I imagine that many women enjoy it as a guilty pleasure because of the calories and bread… my lunch was about 900 calories. But I’ll tell you what, Dear Readers, your body needs food of all kinds, and there are no “bad foods.” Enjoy what you eat! (And I enjoy chicken salad on a croissant.)
Is Chicken Salad Chick good at what it’s good for? Yes! If you love chicken salad as much as I do, this is a very good place to get it!
