Kassi’s Cookies

Review No. 191: Kassi’s Cookie’s

The Situation
She Said:
I’d noticed a different eatery in this downtown location driving by, so when we revived our Eat It blogging, I put Kassi’s Cookies on our list. A Wednesday afternoon called for a nice sweets break, so I picked up He Said at home after an appointment, and off we went.
He Said: Sweet break? I’m game. Kassi’s Cookies, a highly successful boutique bakery located in Mayflower, opened a second location here in downtown Conway in October of last year. How did we let five months pass before trying this out?

Ambience:

She Said: I really enjoyed the energetic vibe here, because it’s fun but not too in-your-face or anxiety-making. It’s “up” but not aggressive with the white tile and pink accents. There was a group of young women (college maybe?) working on a project with their laptops sitting near us, and I could see this as a good place to drop in and hang, soaking up the natural light from the window wall, people watching and working. I also really enjoyed seeing the joy lighting up the faces of the littles who came in after school with their parents! These kiddos were vibrating with happy anticipation. It’s a sweet space for sweet experiences.
He Said: Yes, it’s light and airy and family friendly. Obviously you can dine in or carry out here, since you order at the counter, and some people did stop in to pick up a snack after school or work in the late afternoon when we were there.

Drinks

She Said: Even though I had my mind on the sweet treats I was going to be choosing from for my “afternoon tea,” I was really, really pleased by my latte. It was $6, so it should have been utterly delicious, and it was. I didn’t stipulate what kind of milk because I like dairy and have no issues with it, and my medium latte was rich and creamy, the perfect mix of coffee and frothed milk. This would be a great drink to order (maybe even the large size) to sit and sip and work, read or people watch.
He Said: They had an Italian soda that sounded good to me (maybe next time) but I opted instead for the matcha, which She Said had to explain to me was a highly concentrated form of green tea made from powdered leaves, so it’s full of healthy antioxidants (though also higher in caffeine than regular tea). Anyway, I thought this might be a better choice than the soda since I was already getting enough sugar with the brownie (see below). The matcha did taste like a concentrated and aromatic green tea, kind of creamy rather than watery.

Food

She Said: Standing in front of the display case of gorgeously made, delicious-looking treats, I was frozen by choice for quite a while. In a perfect world, I would have ordered everything that looked good (so, everything?) and sampled them all, but I, like you, live in the real world, so I settled into the delightful dilemma of what to choose. Finally, I selected a lemon blondie, as the lemon slice sitting so prettily on a little tuffet of whipped cream was irresistible to me. Reader, I chose wisely. The blondie was sweet without being cloying, and the lemon throughout was tart, not sour. The blondie went perfectly with my creamy, coffee-bitter latte. While I would like to try more of the very-likely-very-tasty treats in that display case, I wouldn’t mind going back for this exact combination every Wednesday afternoon.

He Said: There were a lot of things in that case that I was drooling over, and I was just narrowing it down to the chocolate. It really didn’t look like I could go wrong, and I picked a chocolate brownie with cream cheese frosting. Believe me, they didn’t skimp on the chocolate or on the cream cheese. This was not the low-fat snack that I should probably have been eating for the sake of my health, but it wasn’t like I had any choice. I can resist anything but temptation. The brownie itself was chocolatey chewy, with chocolate chips just in case you didn’t get enough chocolate, and the cream cheese added its own slightly tarter sweetness in case you were getting overwhelmed by the chocolate. I wouldn’t mind one of these every day, except that I wouldn’t be able to try any of the other lovely treats on display.

Service

She Said: The service was just lovely. The clerk waiting at the register when we came in gave us plenty of time to drool over the treat display and answered questions in a friendly, patient way. They made our drinks attentively and were definitely part of my positive experience at Kassi’s Cookies.
He Said: Yes, she was patient, friendly, and informative, even with me, the world’s slowest orderer (according to my wife. But how does she know? Has she eaten with everybody else in the world?)

What We Got and What We Paid: One matcha, one latte, one lemon blondie, one chocolate cream-cheese brownie, all for $24.88 including tip. I include the tip here because the way-smarter-than-you technologically advanced payment machine that you stick your card into asked me if I wanted a printed receipt, and when I said yes didn’t give it to me. So I never saw the actual itemized receipt and couldn’t refer to it here.

Elapsed Time from Our Arrival to Food Arrival: We walked through the door at 2:46 p.m. and were served our desserts at 2:51 p.m. Most of this time was us dithering over what to order because everything looked so good. I got my latte at 2:56 p.m., and your matcha came shortly after that.

Rating:

She Said: This is the perfect place to sit with a sweet and a delicious coffee. I hope I’ll be back soon.

He Said: There have to be more chocolate items for me to devour, so I’m sure we’ll be back.

Is Kassi’s Cookies good at what it’s good for? Absolutely! Delicious desserts, drinks and delightful digs!
